Who each type suits

Careful sewing
Pressing the seams open at every stage is what separates a sewn garment from a well-sewn one. The most underrated step there is.
Interfacing
Fusible interfacing wants heat, pressure and time, and no back-and-forth movement. A gliding iron unsticks more than it sticks.
Delicate fabrics
A pressing cloth protects silk and wool from direct contact and from shine. The simplest and most effective protection there is.

The trade-offs to weigh

Steam against sensitive fabrics
Steam relaxes and shapes, and makes certain fibres shrink or mark. A pressing cloth and a test on an offcut settle the question.
Ironing against pressing
Gliding the iron distorts pieces cut on the bias; pressing by lifting and setting down keeps the shape. A difference of gesture, not of equipment.
Woven interfacing against non-woven
Woven follows the fabric and is cut on grain; non-woven is simpler, stiffer and sometimes cardboard-like. The choice is made by testing on an offcut.

Questions buyers ask

Should I press while sewing?

Yes, at every stage: press the seams open before joining the next. It is what most distinguishes a well-made garment.

What is the difference between ironing and pressing?

Ironing glides the iron, pressing lifts and sets it down. Gliding distorts pieces cut on the bias; in sewing, you press.

How do I apply fusible interfacing?

Hot iron with or without steam depending on the product, set down and held zone by zone, without gliding. Movement shifts the interfacing and stops it bonding.

What is a pressing cloth for?

To protect from direct contact: it prevents shine on wool and marks on synthetics. A plain cotton cloth does the job.

How do I avoid seam marks on the right side?

By slipping a strip of paper or a sleeve board under the allowance, so the iron does not print the thickness through the fabric.

Do I need steam?

It helps a great deal with shaping and makes certain fibres shrink. Always test on an offcut of the fabric.

How do I clean a sticky soleplate?

A soleplate cleaner on a warm iron, or a cloth and vinegar depending on the marks. A sticky soleplate transfers the dirt to the next fabric.

Can fusible interfacing come away in the wash?

Yes, if the application was too brief or too cool. The duration of the pressure counts as much as the temperature.

What to remember

In sewing you press, you do not iron: the iron lifts and sets down, it does not glide. Press the seams open at every stage, test the steam on an offcut, and apply fusible interfacing without ever letting the iron glide.
