Sewing a long time without buying again

A large length works out far cheaper per metre and suits the colours you genuinely use all the time.

For a single project, a small spool is enough and avoids accumulating half-full spools.

Who each type suits

Everyday sewing
A good polyester thread suits almost everything and survives the wash. The thread to have in black, white and grey.
Cotton and quilting
Cotton thread behaves like the fabric it joins and gives a matt result valued in patchwork. It resists abrasion less well.
Overlocker
Cones of overlocking thread are finer and softer, and go four at a time. Ordinary machine thread is too stiff for it.

The trade-offs to weigh

Price against linting
Cheap thread lints, clogs the machine and breaks. The extra cost of a good thread is repaid in faults avoided.
Polyester against cotton
Polyester is stronger and slightly stretchy; cotton is matt, stable and breaks more easily. The choice follows the fabric.
Large spool against variety
A large length pays off on the basic colours and is absurd on a shade used once.

Questions buyers ask

Should the same thread go on top and in the bobbin?

In the great majority of cases, yes. Two different threads unbalance the tension and give an uneven stitch.

Does cheap thread damage the machine?

It lints and clogs the bobbin compartment and the guides. Not dramatic, but it multiplies the cleanings and the breakages.

Polyester or cotton?

Polyester for strength and stretch, cotton for patchwork and a matt result. Polyester is the default choice.

Does thread go off?

Very old thread, exposed to light and dryness, becomes brittle. Inherited spools often break for no apparent reason.

How should spools be stored?

Away from light and dust, with the thread end secured. A thread unwinding in a drawer tangles and gets damaged.

What do I do if the thread keeps breaking?

Redo the threading with the foot raised, change the needle, then check the tension. In that order: the first two settle most cases.

Do I need a special thread for the overlocker?

Overlocking thread on a cone, finer and softer. You need four at a time, which makes ordinary machine thread impractical.

What to remember

The same thread on top and in the bobbin, polyester by default, and a thread good enough not to lint inside the machine. When the thread breaks, redo the threading with the foot raised and change the needle before touching the tension.
