Who each type suits

Quilting
The use where a table is almost compulsory: a quilt that hangs pulls on the needle and distorts every seam.
Large pieces
Curtains and sheets call for a surface that carries the fabric. Without one, all the weight goes through the needle.
Permanent workshop
A recessed table brings the machine bed level with the work surface. The most comfortable and most permanent solution.

The trade-offs to weigh

Surface against footprint
A large table transforms the work and occupies a permanent space. Folding models exist, at the cost of less stability.
Universal against dedicated
A table advertised as universal often leaves a gap around the free arm. A table dedicated to the model is fitted and far dearer.
Extension against full table
A clip-on extension costs little and covers little surface. A real sewing table genuinely changes the ergonomics.

Questions buyers ask

Is an extension table useful?

On large pieces, very: without it the fabric hangs and pulls on the needle, which distorts the seam and makes the line wander.

Do universal models fit well?

They often leave a gap around the free arm, in which the fabric can catch. Check your machine's dimensions rather than the compatibility claim.

Can I make one?

A board cut to the shape of the free arm, set on trestles at the right height, does most of the work for almost nothing.

At what height should I work?

The machine bed at seated elbow height. A table that is too high tires the shoulders within an hour.

Do I want a recessed table?

It is the most comfortable solution, because the fabric travels flat with no step. It is also the most permanent and the dearest.

Does the table have to be perfectly level?

Level with the machine bed, yes. Even a slight step catches the fabric at every pass.

Are folding tables stable?

Less so than a fixed top, and it shows on fast seams. They remain far better than no surface at all.
