A simple machine with few stitches is learned in an afternoon. Models loaded with functions put people off before the first hem.
Many beginners sell their first machine within a year. A model a step above avoids that second purchase.
Three: straight stitch, zigzag and buttonhole. Everything else is decorative and rarely used, whatever the stated number.
It greatly simplifies an operation beginners dread. One of the few functions that genuinely changes the experience.
Mechanical is simpler to understand and repair; electronic sets the speed and the needle position. Both are fine.
Almost always threading to redo with the foot raised, a blunt needle or too much tension. It is almost never the machine.
More often than people think: after a few hours of sewing, or as soon as a fabric resists. A blunt needle causes half the problems blamed on the machine.
An entry-level machine gets through a denim seam with the right needle. Multiple layers call for a sturdier machine.
The manual and a few videos are enough for the first projects. The essentials are learned by sewing, not by reading.
On a stable table at a good height, with the light coming from in front. Working position explains a great many uneven seams.
Three stitches are enough — straight, zigzag, buttonhole — and the stated number is an argument, not a capability. When the thread breaks, look at the threading and the needle before blaming the machine: it is almost always one of the two.
