Keep a note in the machine cover, or change the needle at the start of every project. It costs well under a euro and it is the first thing to rule out when anything goes wrong. Change it immediately if you have hit a pin, sewn over a zip, or heard the needle knock. Match the new needle to the fabric while you are there — this is the moment to fit a jersey or a jeans needle rather than reaching for another universal.
Questions people actually ask
How can I tell a needle is blunt?
You mostly cannot, by looking. The symptoms are skipped stitches, a popping sound as the needle enters, puckered seams and pulled threads on fine fabric. If any of those appear, change the needle before you change anything else.
Does the needle blunt even on soft fabric?
Yes. The needle strikes the throat plate area thousands of times a minute and the tip rounds off with use regardless of fabric. Synthetics and metallic threads accelerate it.
