Can I trust automatic tension?

For ordinary fabric and thread, yes. It applies a fixed value per stitch rather than measuring anything, so unusual work still needs control.

For ordinary fabric with ordinary thread, yes — and understanding what it does explains where it stops helping.

What automatic tension usually is. On most computerised machines it is not a sensor measuring the stitch. It is a lookup: you select a stitch, and the machine applies the tension value its designers chose for that stitch on typical fabric. Some machines add a motorised tension assembly, so the value can vary between stitch types without you turning anything.

Where it works well. Straight and zigzag stitching on mid weight wovens with general purpose polyester thread. That covers most sewing, and it is a genuine convenience.

Where it does not. Heavy topstitch thread, metallic thread, very fine silk, dense decorative work, and multiple thick layers. The machine has no way to know about any of that, because it is not measuring.

Almost every such machine allows a manual override. It is usually a menu item rather than a dial, and it is worth finding before you need it.

The important consequence. On an automatic machine, an unbalanced stitch is rarely a setting fault. It is threading, a blunt or wrong needle, lint in the thread path, or a bobbin problem. Chasing the tension menu on those machines wastes time that a rethread and a new needle would have saved.

And it does not touch the bobbin, which has its own separate tension exactly as on a mechanical machine.

Rethread with the foot up, fit a new needle, clean the bobbin race. Those three fix it far more often than any menu setting.

Should I prefer a manual dial?

Not necessarily. A dial gives direct control, an automatic system removes a decision. Both work; what matters is being able to override the automatic one.
