Shorter stitches make a stronger seam up to a point, and beyond that point they weaken the fabric rather than the thread.
Why shorter is stronger, initially. More stitches per centimetre means more thread crossing the seam line and more locking points. If one stitch fails, the surrounding stitches carry the load rather than the seam opening.
Why it reverses. Each stitch is a hole. Pack the holes close enough together and you have made a line of perforations — the same principle as a stamp. The fabric then tears along the stitching under load, with the thread perfectly intact. This is why very short stitches are wrong on denim, canvas and leather, and why leather in particular needs a long stitch.
Practical consequences.
Medium woven fabric — 2.5 mm is close to the practical optimum for strength and appearance together.
Heavy fabric — 3 to 3.5 mm. Strength here comes from thread weight and needle size, not from packing stitches together.
Leather and coated fabric — 3 to 4 mm, because the holes do not close.
Points of strain — reinforce with a second row, a bar tack or a triple stitch rather than by shortening the stitch.
What matters more than length. Thread quality and fibre, correct needle size, balanced tension, and appropriate seam allowance. A badly tensioned seam at any length is weaker than a well tensioned one.
Test it. Sew a sample, pull it apart deliberately, and look at whether the thread broke or the fabric tore.
Questions people actually ask
Is a zigzag stronger than a straight stitch?
On stretchy fabric, effectively yes, because it gives instead of snapping. On stable woven fabric a straight stitch is stronger.
Should I sew important seams twice?
A second row just inside the first is a common and effective reinforcement on bags and workwear, and it is better than shortening the stitch.
