How do I overlock fine or sheer fabric?

Use a narrow stitch, a fine needle and reduced pressure. A rolled hem or a two-thread finish is often better than a full overlock.

A standard four-thread overlock is usually too heavy for fine fabric — it adds bulk that shows through and pulls the edge. Change the stitch before you change anything else.

Choose a lighter stitch. A narrow three-thread stitch, or a two-thread overlock if your machine offers one, puts far less thread on the edge. On sheers and scarf edges, a rolled hem is often the right answer and it looks deliberate rather than merely finished.

Fit a fine needle — 70/10 or even 60/8 — of the correct system for your machine, and make sure it is new. Fine fabric shows every skipped stitch and every snag.

Reduce presser foot pressure so the foot is not compressing and dragging the fabric.

Reduce the stitch length slightly for a denser, more supportive edge on fraying sheers.

Loosen the tensions. Fine fabric puckers under tension that is perfectly reasonable on a medium weight. Test and adjust on a doubled scrap of the actual fabric, one dial at a time.

Set differential feed slightly below neutral if the edge is coming out wavy, or slightly above if the fabric is being pulled and puckering. Test both directions rather than guessing.

Support the edge. Sewing over a strip of tissue paper or a water-soluble stabiliser, then tearing it away, transforms the result on chiffon and georgette. It gives the feed something substantial to work with.

Guide, do not pull. Fine fabric being tugged into the blade cuts unevenly and the stitch never recovers.

Questions people actually ask

My sheer edge comes out wavy.

Too much stretch in the feed. Set differential feed to ease the fabric slightly, reduce presser foot pressure, and stop holding the fabric taut behind the foot.

Is woolly nylon worth using here?

In the loopers, yes. It spreads to cover the edge densely, which is what gives a rolled hem on chiffon its soft, solid appearance.
