Buttons, snaps and elastic are what is always missing when it comes to finishing a piece. An assortment stops a project 90% done from being interrupted.
Buying exactly what the pattern calls for costs very little and avoids accumulating odd buttons.
The wider it is, the better it holds and the more it marks. Measure at a comfortable tension, not at the body's resting measurement.
With pliers or a setting tool, on fabric reinforced with interfacing. A snap set on fabric alone tears the material out at the first use.
A closed-end zip for a skirt or a dress, an open-end one for a jacket, an invisible one for a discreet seam. The length follows the opening.
By leaving a small thread shank under the button, then winding a few turns around it before knotting. A button sewn flat pulls off sooner.
