How a plate gets damaged. A needle striking it — from a bent needle, a zigzag set wider than the hole allows, a twin needle used with a wide stitch, or the wrong presser foot for the stitch. Pins driven through by the needle. Dragging the fabric so the needle deflects into the plate edge.

How to test it. Run a length of thread firmly back and forth across the needle hole edge and around the plate surface, and feel for it catching. A cotton wool ball rubbed across the plate catches on anything rough. And look with a torch at an angle — raised metal catches the light.

What the symptoms look like. Thread that shreds or breaks with no other explanation, snags or pulled threads on fine woven fabric, and occasional skipped stitches where the thread is being held.

What to do. A very light polish with fine emery paper or a metal polish removes a small raised edge on a steel plate. Take almost nothing off — the hole must keep its shape, and enlarging it makes fine fabric get pushed down into it.
