Why does my machine embroidery pucker?

Almost always the stabiliser — usually tear-away used on a knit, where only cut-away will hold.

Puckered machine embroidery is nearly always a stabiliser problem, and usually the same one: tear-away used on fabric that stretches.

Tear-away supports the fabric while the design is stitched and then leaves. On a woven that is fine — the fabric holds its own shape. On a knit, nothing supports the design afterwards, and within a few washes it puckers permanently.

Use cut-away on anything that stretches, without exception. It stays in the garment for its life. That is the point of it.

Then the other causes.

Hooping too tight or too loose. The fabric should be taut but not stretched. Stretched fabric relaxes after unhooping and the design gathers with it — this is the second most common cause and it is easy to do without noticing.

Bobbin thread too heavy. Embroidery bobbin thread is finer than ordinary sewing thread, which keeps the back flat under dense stitching. Ordinary thread builds a ridge that pulls.

Design too dense for the fabric. A design with heavy fill stitching on lightweight fabric will pucker whatever you do. Match the design to the fabric weight, or add a fusible interfacing as well as the stabiliser.

Test on a scrap of the actual fabric with the actual stabiliser before committing to a garment. It is the only reliable way to know.

Questions people actually ask

Can I fix embroidery that has already puckered?

Rarely. If it is mild and the fabric is a woven, a careful press with steam sometimes helps. On a knit with the wrong stabiliser, no.

Should I hoop the stabiliser with the fabric?

Yes for most work — hooping both together stops them shifting relative to each other. Floating the fabric on hooped stabiliser is a technique for items you cannot hoop, not the default.
