Work outwards from the wall socket, because the fault is usually before the machine rather than inside it.
Test the socket with something else — a lamp will do. This takes ten seconds and rules out the whole supply.
Check the plug fuse where the plug is fused, and check the lead is fully home in the socket and at the machine end. Machine leads often detach at the machine, and a lead half-seated looks connected.
Check the machine’s own switch, and check the pedal is plugged in. Many machines will not power up at all with the pedal socket empty or half-inserted.
Check the safety interlocks. Several machines cut power when the bobbin cover or the looper cover is open, or when the buttonhole lever is in an odd position. This is designed behaviour and it looks exactly like a dead machine.
Check for a thermal cut-out. Some machines shut down after heavy continuous use and come back after twenty minutes cooling. If it died mid-session rather than on start-up, this is a strong candidate.
Then look for damage. Inspect the whole lead, especially where it flexes at each end, and the pedal cable. Any discolouration, kinking or heat marking means stop.
Then the machine’s fuse, on models that have an accessible one. Check the manual for its location and rating, and never fit a higher rating.
Beyond that it is an electrical repair — a switch, a board or internal wiring — and it belongs with a technician rather than with a screwdriver.

The light works but the machine will not run.
Power is reaching the machine, so suspect the pedal, the pedal socket, or an interlock. Check the bobbin cover is properly closed.
It died mid-seam and came back later.
That pattern suggests a thermal cut-out or an intermittent connection at a plug. Note whether it happens under load and how long it takes to recover.
