Neither is the better machine in the abstract — they are better at different things.

Buy the Singer if the jobs you keep putting off involve thick seams — hemming jeans, taking in workwear, canvas repairs. It is the machine that does not stall where a lighter one gives up.
Buy the bernette if you are making garments rather than mending them. Stitch consistency on ordinary dress fabric matters more there than the ability to climb a folded denim seam, and the dealer network is worth real money over a decade.
It is heavier-duty than a budget domestic machine, and considerably lighter-duty than an industrial one. It handles denim, canvas and multiple layers that stall entry-level machines. It is not built for continuous production sewing, and the name invites people to expect that.
Both are usable from day one — each has a drop-in bobbin and a one-step buttonhole, which are the two features that most often defeat beginners. Choose on what you plan to sew, not on which is easier.
