Presser foot pressure is how hard the foot pushes the fabric down onto the feed dogs. Too much on a knit and the fabric stretches as it feeds, producing the waved seam everyone blames on tension. Too little on chiffon and the fabric slides rather than feeds. If your machine has a dial or a screw on top of the presser bar, this is it. Change it one increment at a time and sew a test seam after each — it is the least documented and most useful adjustment on a domestic machine.

On knits and on anything thick. Too much pressure stretches a knit as it feeds and stops thick layers moving at all. Reducing it lets the fabric pass without being pushed forward by the foot.
When should I increase it?
On very fine or slippery fabric that is sliding under the foot rather than being fed. More pressure means more grip on the feed dogs.
