A cap needs a cap frame — a curved hooping system that holds the front panel round a driver — and without one the results on a standard flat hoop are limited.
Why a flat hoop struggles. A structured cap has a curved front, a stiff buckram lining, a centre seam and a sweatband. A flat hoop cannot hold that shape flat, so the fabric lifts, the needle deflects and the design distorts. Machines sold with cap capability come with the frame and a driver that rotates the cap under the needle.
What you can do without one. Unstructured, soft, unlined caps can sometimes be hooped flat if you unpick the sweatband to open the crown out. It is fiddly and it is not reliable on anything with buckram.
Design constraints. Keep the design small and well within the front panel — commonly no more than about 50 mm high on a standard cap. Avoid crossing the centre seam if you can, since the extra thickness there deflects the needle and shifts registration. Bottom-up stitching designs, digitised specifically for caps, run outwards from the centre and hold registration better.
Stabiliser. A firm tear-away or a cut-away behind the front panel, in addition to the buckram already there.
Needle and speed. A 75/11 sharp embroidery needle, and a substantially reduced speed. Caps are the most registration-sensitive item there is.
Test on a spare cap of the same construction before touching a customer’s or a favourite. Cap panels differ enormously in stiffness.

Can I use a hooping station instead?
A hooping aid helps you get the cap into a cap frame squarely. It does not replace the frame itself.
Why does my cap design shift halfway through?
Usually the cap moved in the frame, or the design crossed the centre seam. Tighten the frame, reduce speed, and choose a design that runs outwards from the centre.
