What is the real difference between a mechanical and a computerised machine?

One feature genuinely justifies computerised: the one-step buttonhole. The stitch library does not.

Mechanically they sew the same seam. What differs is how much the machine does for you, and one of those things matters far more than the rest.

What computerised actually adds:

  • A one-step buttonhole that measures your button and sews the matching buttonhole in a single operation. This is the one that changes outcomes, because buttonholes are the operation people most often ruin.
  • Needle up/down positioning — the needle stops in the fabric so you can pivot without turning the handwheel.
  • Often an automatic thread cutter.
  • A stitch library of anything from 40 to 600 stitches.

What it costs you. More that can fail electronically, and less that a general repairer can fix mechanically. After some years a control board may not be available.

The honest summary. If you make garments with buttonholes, the step up pays for itself in ruined plackets avoided. If you hem curtains, repair jeans and take in shirts, it does not — a four-step buttonhole works, it just asks more of you.

The stitch count is a red herring. You will use four stitches: straight, zigzag, stretch and buttonhole. A machine offering 400 gives you the same four.

Are mechanical machines more reliable?

They have fewer parts that can fail and nothing that goes out of date, and a general repairer can service them anywhere. In practice both types last well; the difference matters most if you are far from a dealer.

Which is better for a beginner?

Either, but the one-step buttonhole is a genuine advantage for someone learning. It removes the operation that most often ends with an unpickable placket.
