A knee lift is a bar that plugs into the front of the machine bed and hangs down under the table. Push it sideways with your knee and the presser foot rises — with both hands still on the fabric.
Where it earns its keep. Pivoting at corners. Appliqué, where you turn constantly. Quilting. Sewing curves in short arcs. Anything where you stop, reposition and continue every few centimetres. The alternative is taking a hand off the work, reaching for the lever, lifting, repositioning with one hand, and lowering again — and every one of those hand movements is a chance for the fabric to shift.
A second benefit on many machines. The knee lift raises the foot higher than the hand lever does, giving extra clearance for getting bulky work under the needle.
The limitations. It needs the machine on a stable table with room underneath and the socket accessible. It does not work well on a machine you move about or use on a small folding surface. And it takes a session or two before the movement becomes automatic rather than something you think about.
A clue about how useful it is: industrial machines almost all have one, because anyone sewing for hours will not spend those hours reaching for a lever.
How to weigh it when buying. Below feed quality, presser foot lift and stitch quality — it changes comfort rather than capability, and nothing is impossible without it. But if your machine came with one and it is still in the accessory box, fit it. It is free, and most people who try it leave it in.
Questions people actually ask
Can I add one to a machine that has no socket?
No. The socket and the internal linkage are built in. If the machine has no socket, the mechanism is not there.
Is it the same as a foot pedal function?
No. Some machines have a heel-tap or a button that lifts the foot. Those do the same job electronically; a knee lift is mechanical and works on machines with no electronics at all.
