A topstitch needle has an extra large eye and a very deep groove, made to carry thick thread without shredding it. It is the needle to fit whenever the thread is heavier than general purpose.
Why the eye size matters so much. Heavy topstitch thread forced through a standard eye rubs against the metal on every stroke, and the thread passes the eye many times before it is finally stitched into the seam. The result is a fuzzy, weakening thread and eventually a break — usually after a good length of visible stitching.
Sizes. 90/14 and 100/16 are the common ones. Match the size to the fabric weight as well as to the thread.
Use it for.
- Heavy topstitch thread on jeans, jackets and bags
- Buttonhole thread and jeans thread
- Two strands of ordinary thread through one needle, an old trick for a heavier line without special thread
Do not use it on fine fabric. The large eye needs a thick blade, and the hole it leaves shows badly on lightweight cloth.
Ordinary thread in the bobbin. Heavy thread top and bottom overloads the bobbin case and rarely improves the appearance of the line.
Loosen the top tension slightly and lengthen the stitch to 3 to 3.5 mm. The long stitch is what makes topstitching read as deliberate.
And it is not a jeans needle. A jeans needle is stiff and sharp for dense fabric; a topstitch needle is about the thread.

Can I topstitch without a topstitch needle?
With ordinary thread, yes. With heavy topstitch thread you will get shredding and breaks sooner or later.
Can I really thread two strands through one eye?
Yes, through a topstitch needle. Feed them from two spools so they do not twist, and expect to loosen the tension.
