Embroidery breaks thread more than ordinary sewing because it runs fast and changes direction constantly. Work through this list in order.
The needle. An embroidery needle has a larger eye and a deeper groove than a universal, specifically to protect the thread. Fit one, and change it often — embroidery blunts needles faster than sewing does. This is the answer most of the time.
Top tension too tight. Embroidery generally wants slightly looser top tension than construction sewing. Reduce it a half-number and test.
Speed. Reduce it. Thread heats as it passes through the eye at speed, and rayon and metallic threads are particularly sensitive.
How the thread comes off the spool. Cross-wound spools want a horizontal pin; parallel-wound want a vertical one. The wrong orientation makes the thread twist as it feeds, and twisted thread snags.
Design density. A design with very dense fill on lightweight fabric puts continuous load on the thread. If a specific design always breaks and others do not, the design is the variable.
A burr somewhere. Check the needle plate hole and the thread path for a rough spot.
And check the thread itself. Old rayon in particular becomes brittle. Try a fresh spool before assuming a machine fault.

It only breaks with metallic thread.
Metallic is abrasive and fragile. Use a metallic needle, slow right down, loosen tension, and use a vertical spool stand so it unwinds without twisting.
It breaks at the same point in the design.
That points to design density or a direction change the machine struggles with, not to a mechanical fault. Try reducing speed through that section.
