Work from the settings outwards, because the machine is far more likely to be restrained than worn out.
The speed limiter. On a computerised machine, a slider caps the top speed regardless of the pedal. It is easily knocked, and it is the first thing to check because it costs nothing.
The foot pedal. Something resting on it, a trapped cable, or a worn pedal that no longer reaches full travel. Try the machine with the pedal fully depressed and nothing near it.
Lint and hardened oil. A machine full of compacted lint, or one whose oil has gummed after long storage, genuinely drags. Clean the race and the feed area, oil where your manual specifies, and turn the handwheel by hand — if it feels heavy, that is your answer.
The fabric. Heavy or many-layered work slows any domestic machine, and that is the motor behaving correctly rather than failing.
A slipping drive belt. If the motor sounds like it is running at full speed while the needle moves slowly, the belt is slipping or the rubber winder tyre is rubbing on the handwheel.
Low mains voltage or an extension lead shared with something heavy occasionally does it.
Then the motor. Motors do wear, especially carbon brushes on older machines, but this is genuinely uncommon and should only be considered once everything above has been ruled out.
A machine that slows only under load and runs freely with the foot up is telling you the mechanism is stiff, not that the motor is dying.
Questions people actually ask
It runs fast then dies away.
Usually a worn foot pedal or a poor connection at the pedal socket. Wiggle the plug with the machine running and see whether the speed changes.
Does sewing slowly damage the motor?
No. Domestic motors are made for it. What loads a motor is forcing it through fabric beyond what the machine can handle.
