Bernette b48 Funlock review

A combined overlock and coverstitch machine, proven on the UK and US stores only. On the German store the same search returns a set of presser feet, which is the more useful warning.

The bottom line A genuine three-in-one, sold on two of the six stores we checked. Buy through a dealer if you are outside them.

Hands-on testing pending. Everything below is either a manufacturer specification, cited as such, or something we verified ourselves.

What we verified, and the warning matters more than the machine. We searched all six Amazon stores. The machine appears on two: B071KX7S1Q on amazon.co.uk, listed as “Bernina Bernette B48 Overlock & Chainstitch Coverstitch Machine”, and B07FMB5JQH on amazon.com, listed as a “Bernette B48 Funlock Serger Coverstitch Overlock Machine”.

On amazon.de, the same search returns something else entirely. The top result was B07C2W3HH7 — “Bernette Overlock Nähfuß-Set 6-teilig für B44 + B48”, a six-piece set of presser feet. It carries the brand and the model number in its title, and it passed our automated filters for exactly that reason. It costs a small fraction of the machine. Someone searching for a b48 in Germany will meet that listing first, and we would rather say so here than publish a link to it.

What Bernette states. The UK and US titles describe overlock, chainstitch and coverstitch in one machine. Beyond that the listings carry no feature specification we are willing to repeat as fact.

Where we would look before buying. How long the conversion between overlocking and coverstitching actually takes, and whether the looper threading is assisted. Neither is published, and the first one decides whether you will use both halves of the machine.

What we like, and what we don't

Strengths

  • One machine covering overlock, coverstitch and chainstitch
  • Bernina's entry brand, with a dealer network behind it

Compromises

  • Found on two of the six stores we checked
  • A German search for this model returns a presser foot set, not the machine
  • Combination machines mean conversion time between operations

Questions people actually ask

Combination machine or two dedicated ones?

If you have the space and the budget, two dedicated machines, because converting between overlocking and coverstitching takes long enough that people stop alternating — and that means they stop doing one of the two operations on the same garment. A combination machine is the right answer when the table is small or the budget is one machine, and it is a real answer, not a compromise product.

Why can I not buy it in Germany or France?

We did not find it on those stores. Bernette distributes through Bernina dealers, and a good deal of the European volume goes through them rather than through Amazon. If you are in continental Europe, a dealer is the route for this machine — and for a machine with this many loopers, a dealer relationship is worth something anyway.
